¿Te describirías como «careful with money» o eres un «big spender»?

El lenguaje que utilizamos para hablar de nuestros hábitos monetarios dice mucho de nosotros. Hoy exploramos los matices entre ahorrar con sabiduría y derrochar con exceso.

El arte de no gastar: El ahorro positivo

Thrifty (Ahorrador/a)

Una persona thrifty gasta su dinero con cuidado y no lo malgasta. Es una cualidad admirada.

«My grandparents were thrifty and saved every penny.»

Frugal (Frugal)

Similar al español, describe a alguien que solo compra lo estrictamente necesario, sugiriendo un estilo de vida muy sencillo.

«He was frugal in his habits, growing most of his food and mending his clothes until they fell to pieces.»

Cuando el ahorro se vuelve negativo: «Tacaños»

Mean

«He was too mean to buy her a proper bed.»

Inglés Americano

Cheap

«I’m too cheap to pay the full price.»

También utilizamos los adjetivos informales stingy y tight, y el formal parsimonious:

  • Stingy: «He’s so stingy – he never buys anyone a drink.»

  • Tight: «Come on, don’t be so tight – get yourself a taxi!»

  • Parsimonious: «She had a reputation for being rather parsimonious.»

El nivel «Scrooge»: Miserly & Misers

El adjetivo miserly (avaro) proviene del sustantivo miser. Describe a alguien que odia gastar dinero.

«Her uncle, a miserly old man, refused to help her out.»

Penny-pinching

Tight-fisted

«He’s fabulously wealthy, but notoriously tight-fisted.»

Mientras que generous es positivo, extravagant o lavish sugieren un gasto excesivo.

Profligate & Spendthrift

Términos formales para describir el despilfarro puro.

«They were highly critical of the monarch’s profligate spending.»
