En verano siempre apetece más tomar un buen pescado, o eso es lo que me ocurre a mí. Y si puede ser con vistas hacia el mar, ya es que se convierte en un sueño hecho realidad (unas buenas sardinicas a la plancha). Aunque el tema que vemos hoy trata sobre pescado, no será sobre vocabulario relacionado con ello (para ello ya lo tenéis dentro del curso de “Vocabulario de Restaurantes“). Hoy vamos a ver unas cuantas expresiones en las que la mayor importancia recae en la palabra “fish”.
- Big fish – Una persona importante
Ejemplo: I’m a big fish in a small pond.
- Fish for compliments – Tratar de manipular a alguien para que te elogie
Ejemplo: She’s fishing for compliments. Just ignore her.
- Fish out of water – Alguien que no se encuentra cómodo en un lugar o posición.
Ejemplo: I always feel like a fish out of water at formal gatherings.
- You can’t make fish of one and fowl of the other – Todo el mundo debe ser tratado de la misma manera.
Ejemplo: The contract calls for new hires to be paid less permanently. But why make fish of one and fowl of the other?
- (A) different kettle of fish – No es comparable
Ejemplo: You may be able to read French well, but speaking it fluently is a different kettle of fish entirely.
- Better fish to fry – Algo más importante que tratar
Ejemplo: I can’t worry about that now, I’ve got better fish to fry!
- Drink like a fish – Beber demasiado alcohol
Ejemplo: I worry about Ian; she drinks like a fish.
- Neither fish nor fowl – Alguien difícil de clasificar.
Ejemplo: The car that they drove up in was neither fish nor fowl. It must have been made out of spare parts.
- A fish story – Una gran mentira
Ejemplo: I’m sure Grandpa is just telling you a fish story, there’s no way all of that’s true!
