Hoy es turno para el verbo “catch”, que significa agarrar o coger (dependiendo de la zona en la que vives puede crear algún que otro malentendido 🙂 ). En general, no hay problemas con las collocations de este verbo, pero ya sabéis, nunca hay que confiarse demasiado 😛
- Catch a ball – Coger / agarrar una pelota
Ejemplo: I can catch the ball with one hand.
- Catch a bus – Coger / Tomar un autobus
Ejemplo: Do not forget to catch the bus in the afternoon.
- Catch a chill / cold – Coger / pillar un resfriado
Ejemplo: If you keep staying out in the rain, you’re going to catch a chill!
- Catch a thief – Atrapar a un ladrón
Ejemplo: The laws in some countries make to the police have a hard time catching thieves.
- Catch fire / light / alight – Incendiarse, prenderse fuego
Ejemplo: Be careful, gasoline can catch fire very easily.
- Catch sight of – Atisbar, avistar, ver
Ejemplo: If I go to that popular club, I think I will catch sight of someone famous.
- Catch the attention / eye – Llamar la atención, atraer miradas
Ejemplo: Her sweet accent caught my attention.
- Catch the flu – Pillar / tener la gripe
Ejemplo: Michael seems to catch the flu every year.
- Catch a glimpse – Vislumbrar, ver por un momento
Ejemplo: I caught a glimpse of Michael Jordan as he walked past my house.
- Catch your breath – Recobrar / Recuperar el aliento
Ejemplo: It took me several minutes to catch my breath after finishing the marathon.
- Catch someone off guard / Catch someone by surprise – Tomar por sorpresa a alguien, agarrar desprevenido a alguien
Ejemplo: You caught me off guard, I didn’t know you were coming.
- Catch someone at a bad time – Pillar a alguien en mal momento
Ejemplo: Am I catching you at a bad time?
